Biography

Miller is a watercolor artist who is recognized for his scenes of buildings and landscapes executed in bold and brilliant colors. He has been painting for over 60 years and is still studying art.  He works plein-air and completes his painting in his studio and home in Vienna, Virginia.

Every other year, Vienna Arts Society's members are invited to submit pen and ink drawings for the annual Town of Vienna Calendar. Several of Miller's drawings have been included. He was also selected to design the train mural seen above, an impressive sight that is familiar to many local residents.  Completed with other volunteers, it depicts an old steam locomotive arriving in Vienna, with the Town Hall, Vienna Presbyterian Church, and the Vienna Inn in the background.

Miller began painting in the early 1960s and attended Adult Education classes when he and his wife lived in Old Greenwich, Connecticut. His job then brought him to Vienna 33 years ago. He worked in Washington DC as Director of Government Relations for the Chemical Division of Occidental Petroleum Corporation. Currently, he is a member of the Vienna Presbyterian Church and Westwood Country Club. He is married to Mary Clark Miller and they have three children and two grandchildren.

After retiring, Miller went back to his former interest in watercolor painting. Wishing to become more proficient, he enrolled in classes at NOVA and the Art League of Alexandria, and still attends workshops given by nationally-known artists on the East Coast. Many summer vacations in New Hampshire and travels throughout Europe have provided him with his subject matter. Armed with palette and brush, he painted markets, street scenes, and surroundings imbued with a strong sense of light.

Harris Miller was juried into the Potomac Valley Watercolorists, a select group of artists based in the Virginia, Maryland, and Washington area. He exhibits in their shows and participates in their activities.

He has had several one-artist shows in Niagara Falls; Wolfboro, NH; and Vienna, VA. and has been accepted into juried shows at the Art League of Alexandria, Virginia Watercolor Society, Susquehanna Art Society, and the League of Reston Artists. He has been a long-time member of the Vienna Arts Society and has been a board member for many years. In 2005, that society honored Miller by selecting him as Artist of the Year.

In 2008, he was awarded First Place at the Annual Treasury of Art Show for his painting “Fire Engine 402” that now graces the wall of the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department.

Harris Miller is represented by the Blue Shutter Gallery, Wolfboro, NH and the Frame Shop, Boothbay Harbor, Maine.
